What is IV Sedation?

I.V. sedation, or intravenous sedation, is a method of administering sedative medications through a vein to help patients relax and feel more comfortable during dental procedures.

It is a type of conscious sedation that allows patients to remain responsive but relaxed and drowsy. IV sedation is administered by your dentist - a trained and licensed healthcare professional. In addition, a sedation team includes a dental assistant and a monitoring assistant who reads the patient's vitals. As a result, patients remain conscious and able to respond to commands but may not remember much of the procedure.

IV sedation is used for patients with high anxiety or fear about dental procedures or for procedures expected to be lengthy or uncomfortable. It can also be used for patients who have difficulty sitting still, have a strong gag reflex, or need to undergo multiple procedures in one visit.

What are the benefits of IV Sedation?

1 Reduced anxiety and fear and increases patient comfort: IV sedation can help patients with a high level of anxiety or fear about dental procedures feel more at ease and reduce their anxiety.

2 Relaxation: IV sedation can help patients to feel relaxed and calm during the procedure, reducing anxiety and discomfort.

3 Pain management: IV sedation can help to reduce pain during dental procedures, making the experience more comfortable for the patient.

4 Reduced memory of the procedure: Patients who undergo IV sedation may not remember much of the procedure, which can benefit those who fear the dentist.

5 More prolonged procedures: IV sedation can allow patients to undergo longer or more complex procedures, such as multiple extractions or full-mouth rehabilitation, in one appointment. I.V. sedation makes it possible to complete more extensive work in one appointment and reduces the need for multiple appointments, saving patients time and money.

6 Reduced gag reflex: IV sedation can help patients who have a strong gag reflex to relax and reduce the likelihood of gagging during the procedure.
